Police 'unable' to say what the arrests were for

We’ve asked South Wales Police what the three people were arrested on suspicion of but they have said they are ‘unable’ to tell us at this stage but hope to provide an update later today.

Three people arrested

“Shortly after 12.20pm today officers attended an incident on Miskin Street in the Cathays area of Cardiff.
“Armed officers were deployed to the scene as a precaution and the road was closed in order to safeguard members of the public and officers at the scene.
“Two males and a female have been arrested in connection with this incident and have been taken to Cardiff Bay Police Station.
“Miskin Street has now reopened.”

'Lots of shouting' from one house

Our reporter says that he and eyewitnesses heard “lots of shouting” coming from inside the house which was at the centre of the operation.
Police officers have now begun to leave the scene, with three 4x4 vehicles among those to have pulled away.

Cordon 'taken down'

There are reports that part of the cordon have just been taken down.

'Dog unit called out initially'

A resident of Miskin Street said: “They have completely cordoned off Ruthin Gardens. About an hour ago, the police were called out to a man who was lying on the floor – I’m not sure if he was intoxicated but we were right next to him.
“It was a dog unit that was called out first with one officer at the scene.
“Then another backup unit came, with another officer and it has built from there in terms of numbers of police.
“A police helicopter was also above the scene, just opposite Ruthin Gardens.”

Here's an update from reporter Thomas Deacon at the scene

Armed officers and riot police are at the scene and there are two police cars and one police van.
There are about a dozen officers all together.
Miskin Road and Ruthin Gardens are cordoned off but residents living alongside Ruthin Gardens are being allowed into their properties.

Police 'surrounded a car'

The witness added: “It’s been going on for about an hour – I walked past once when it was all beginning and the police were all around this one car parked in the middle of the street, they had someone in the police car and were looking through their bags in the boot. Now the car’s gone though.”

Cordons 'there for neighbours' safety'

Another witness said: “The whole street and surrounding area has been cordoned off, and there’s about five police cars and a police van. There was also a helicopter.
“The police said it’s a police incident and the cordons are there for our safety.”

Police statement

A police spokesman has told us: “South Wales Police is currently at the scene of an ongoing incident in the Cathays area.
“Armed officers have been deployed to the scene as a precaution.
“Miskin Street is currently closed in order to safeguard members of the public and officers at the scene.”

A house is 'surrounded'

“We can’t see loads but there’s armed policemen surrounding a house with the riot shields and also a helicopter circling the area,” one witness said.
“About five police cars are blocking off Miskin Street.”
