Cardiff,South Wales - Teenager grew thousands of pounds worth of cannabis in his mother's house

Joshua Sullivan, 19, from Cardiff, admitted growing more than half a kilo of the Class B drug

A teenage father-to-be grew more than £6,000 worth of cannabis in a bedroom at his mum’s house as part of “a significant set up”.
Joshua Sullivan admitted growing more than half a kilo of the Class B drug in a locked room at the property in Cardiff .
Cardiff Crown Court heard the 19-year-old ran away when he was stopped by a police officer on May 4, which led to his home on Bryn Celyn Road in Pentwyn being searched.
His mother let officers in and they found 10 cannabis plants growing in a locked rear bedroom.
Police estimated the potential yield as 511g with a street value of £6,380.
Sullivan’s phone was seized and found to contain several messages relating to drug supply.

Guilty plea

He initially told officers the drugs were for personal use, but pleaded guilty on December 8 to production and supply of cannabis.
Prosecutor David Pugh described the growing area, which included heat lamps and a ventilation system, as “a significant set up”.
David Elias, defending, said his client had no relevant previous convictions.
The court heard Sullivan, who is looking for work, is due to become a father for the first time in April.
He told the judge his client was able to complete unpaid work and asked for any sentence to be suspended.
Judge Jeremy Jenkins described the operation as “quite sophisticated”, but accepted Sullivan presented a low risk of re-offending.
He made an order for the growing equipment to be forfeited and destroyed.

"This is your one and only chance"

The judge told the teenager: “I will make you this promise now – if you come back before me for any reason, you will go into detention. Do you understand?
“This is your one and only chance. You have got everything going for you. Seize it and stay out of trouble.”
Judge Jenkins sentenced him to 26 weeks detention in a young offender institution, suspended for 18 months.
He must also carry out 20 days of a rehabilitation activity and 80 hours of unpaid work.
