A man who abused two gay partners “had no deep-rooted distaste for homosexuals”, a court was told.
Magistrates in Prestatyn heard that both Gary Smith and Brian Leadbetter were upset by Mathew Offless’s comments which they felt were unacceptable.
Prosecutor Andy Slight said that Offless had been barred from the Wine Vaults public house in Ruthin and came across the licensee, Mr Smith, outside the premises on October 10 last year.
After a brief conversation they shook hands but then Offless called him a “f*****g gay t***”.
Mr Smith went to another pub to borrow a barrel of beer and as he and Mr Leadbetter, his partner, were lifting it over the bar Offless passed further remarks about Mr Leadbetter.
In his victim impact statement Mr Smith said he had been in the pub trade for 15 years and was upset by the comments.
Mr Leadbetter said he was embarrassed by the remarks and described Offless as “small-minded”.
Sam Aynsley, defending, said that Offless believed that after shaking hands he would be allowed back into the Wine Vaults, but he was not.
“He has no deep-rooted distaste for homosexuals,” he said.
Offless, 43, of Ynys Wen, Bodfari, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and was fined £280. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £20 surcharge.
