Three men are beginning jail terms today after being sentenced at crown court in separate cases involving intent to supply drugs, attempted rape and attacking an ex-partner.
In the first case. an Anglesey man said by his counsel to have been used by others to deliver drugs to south Gwynedd was jailed for three-and-a-half years.
Gavin Jones, 33, of High Street, Bryngwran, admitted possessing cocaine with intent to supply.
Judge Geraint Walters said at Caernarfon crown court that Jones had an accident in 2006 which had affected his life and he had been unable to work. But he told him :”You made a very bad decision because everybody knows if you get involved in the dirty business of supplying Class A drugs there’s only going to be one consequence.”
Prosecuting counsel Simon Mills said last August police stopped a Volvo car on the outskirts of Caernarfon which was driven by Jones, and then searched his home. The alleged value of the discovered drugs was £3,600.
“We don’t believe the defendant has any assets of significance,” counsel added.
Barrister Dafydd Roberts, defending, said Jones had a good work ethic and had been a steel erector. He was fit and well until he fell from a height and was injured.
A probation officer said Jones got involved with “negative peers” and allowed his house to be used by others to prepare drugs and drove to places when asked to do so.
Detective Sergeant Dafydd Curry said: “We welcome the sentence today handed down to Gavin Jones at court.
"We are committed to continually target drug dealers in our area who cause significant harm in our community.”
'Disturbing ordeal'
Also at Caernarfon crown court today, a man who tried to rape a young Wrexham woman during what a judge described as a “most disturbing ordeal” was jailed for six years.
Craig Smith, 25, of Cockermouth in Cumbria, was “emotionally unstable” and “completely lost it” after drinking too much, Judge Geraint Walters said: “It seems to me you do have some very real issues which you are going to have to resolve,” the judge told him.
Smith denied the charges but was convicted of the sex offence and assault causing actual bodily harm by a jury after a trial. He must register as a sex offender for life.
The judge said he had punched his victim.
Simon Mills, defending, said Smith had difficult problems and a “personality disorder.” After the guilty verdicts, the barrister said he accepted that custody was inevitable.
'Frightening and sustained ordeal'
And in another case, a man who subjected his estranged partner to what a judge described as a “frightening and sustained” attack at a Llandudno hotel was jailed for eight months.
Carl Machin, 36, was well-built and had punched Jackie Dawson, 37, in the face. Judge Geraint Walters added: ”There’s no escaping this conclusion - you really do have difficulties with controlling your anger. Where that stems from I don’t know.
“You are effectively a bully when it comes to your behaviour towards women.”
Machin, of Poulton-le-Fylde, had been on licence from a previous jail term for violence against the victim.
A three-year restraining order was made. He admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.
Prosecutor Simon Mills said Machin had also squeezed the victim’s throat and she blacked out.
Sarah Yates, defending, said the couple had an “on and off” turbulent relationship. But in the weeks before the attack Machin had made a better life for himself and had a full-time job. Machin, who had been in the army, was “extremely remorseful and ashamed” of his behaviour.
