A PLEA to prevent copycat attacks has been made after a police car was torched.
Firefighters battled the blaze in Y Wern, Caia Park, after a North Wales Police marked car was deliberately set on fire shortly before 9.30am on Friday.
Smithfield Councillor Keith Gregory was at the scene to witness the fire as plumes of smoke filled the streets in the area.
He said: “All the roads were blocked off and you couldn’t move, because of the high police presence.
“There was debris all over the place.
“It sounds like the car was just parked there and some young lad has gone for it, opportunistically.
“Apparently the police have got a description of him but the worrying thing is that it’s been done in broad daylight.
“I just hope no-one else gets any ideas, we don’t want any copycats.”
On Thursday night, arsonists also struck at an empty property in Caia Park.
They set fire to a flat on Garner Road shortly before 7pm.
Fire damage was contained to curtains in the first-floor property.
Two fire crews from Wrexham attended the scene.
No one was injured.
An appeal for information has been issued, with North Wales Police denying the car fire is linked to the flat fire.
Wrexham town centre inspector, Paul Wycherley, said: “This incident is not being connected to a deliberate fire at a boarded up flat last night in Garner Road at 6.52pm.
“The arsons are being investigated separately and I am appealing to Sresidents or anyone who may have information about either incident to call police on 101, quoting crime reference RC15166003 and S166270.”
