ARMED police officers have swooped on a university building in Swansea after reports that a student had a weapon.
The officers were called to University of Wales Trinity St David's (UWTSD) Swansea Business School in High Street after a tip-off from staff about a man with a gun in a bag.
The firearms officers, who were in plain clothes, went into the building and arrested a 20-year-old man as he sat at a desk - an imitation blank firing pistol was recovered, and enquiries are continuing.
South Wales Police chief inspector Chris Truscott praised the actions of university staff in raising the alarm.
He said: "While being in possession of an imitation firearm is a serious offence, it was not used to harm or threaten anyone during this incident and the police response to the information we received from university staff was swift, proportionate and effective.
"An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is continuing."
A spokesman for UWTSD said the university was committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its students and staff at all times.
He said: "Any perceived risk is taken very seriously, as demonstrated by the actions taken in this matter. We would like to thank South Wales Police for their immediate response to the incident which, as indicted, presented no danger to students or staff.
"We are also very grateful to the staff involved for their swift actions and professionalism while following university procedures."
