Maybe he should stop buying drugs and buy food?
A homeless man said to be desperate for food burgled a North Wales chapel.
Stephen McCard, 35, forced his way into Capel y Groes at Bodhyfryd in Wrexham , one Sunday in August.
An internal door was damaged and he eat food in the kitchen.
His solicitor Justine McVitie told Flintshire magistrates’ court at Mold on Tuesday that it was an unsavoury offence because of the venue.
But it showed her client’s level of desperation.
He was homeless and hungry after his benefits had been sanctioned, she explained.
McCard, said to have been living at the Ty Nos night shelter in Wrexham, for a long time, admitted burglary.
He was given a 12 month community order with six months drug rehabilitation.
The defendant was also ordered to pay £80 costs, a £150 criminal court charge and a £60 surcharge.
Prosecutor Justin Espie said that at 9-30 a.m. on August 16 the chapel door was found unsecure, the kitchen door was open and an untidy search had taken place.
Food and drink had been consumed and the defendant was arrested after a finger print was found on the premises.
Miss McVitie said that it was a low level burglary in order to steal foodstuffs.
At the time her client was “homeless and desperate”, she explained.
“It was a spur of the moment offence to steel food which he consumed.”
The court heard that the defendant had started experimenting with amphetamines 20 years ago and was deemed suitable for a drug rehabilitation programme.
