A pensioner has been found guilty of attacking his neighbour with an iron bar, shovel and saw in a parking row.
The jury of seven women and five men took four and a half hours to find David John Leavers , 71, of Peniel Terrace, Llan Ffestinog, Blaenau Ffestiniog guilty by a majority of 10-2 of intentionally wounding 51 year-old David Lloyd Hughes.
They also found guilty of smashing his car window during the altercation.
Leavers, who was previously of good character and who had told the court he suffered from ill health, put his hand towards his chest when the jury foreman announced the verdicts.
He was remanded in custody by Judge Rhys Rowlands until December 17 when he will be sentenced at Mold Crown Court.
'Seeking confrontation'
After the verdicts were given, Judge Rhys Rowlands, said: “It is a very serious offence which can only be dealt with by a custodial sentence of some length despite your ill health and your age.
“You were seeking confrontation for some reason.”
Describing Leavers as “cantankerous” and “difficult”, the judge said he’d inflicted “a serious injury” on Mr Hughes.
The judge commended Mr Hughes for behaving with “remarkable restraint” when he wrestled an iron bar from Leavers and used it to defend himself from being hit by him with a shovel on December 12 last year.
The judge also ordered that a pre-sentence report would be made by the probation service, including a report on Mr Leavers’ health from his GP as well as a victim impact statement from Mr Hughes.
Defending barrister Simon Mills, for Leavers, said: “He is realistic and understands that the court is going to pass a significant custodial sentence.”
