POLICE are urging homeowners to be on their guard after a series of burglaries targeting jewellery.
Four houses in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot have been burgled in four days in similar-style incidents, with intruders breaking-in during the daytime or early evenings.
Officers say the burglars are ignoring items such as electrical goods in favour of jewellery.
Residents are now being urged to take steps to keep their homes safe — and those with expensive items of jewellery are being advise to invest in a home safe.
In the meantime police have stepped-up foot patrols involving both uniformed and plain clothes officers.
South Wales Police detective inspector Mark Kavanagh of Swansea CID said: "The burglaries we have seen in the past week have happened during the day with entry being forced into properties and jewellery being stolen.
"It is important that we advise people what is taking place so they can take necessary steps to protect their homes.
"There are crime prevention measures that can be put in place to deter a burglar such as locking doors and windows, installing an alarm or CCTV, and not leaving valuables items such as iPads and car keys on show.

"Those who have expensive jewellery should consider making use of a safety box facility or installing a good quality safe that is secured to the wall or floor."
The first break-in happened in Channel View, Bryncoch, during the evening of Friday, November 13, when a quantity of jewellery was taken.
On the following Sunday burglaries reported in Gomer Road, Townhill, and Pen yr Heol Drive in Sketty, and on Monday a property in Heol Dulais, Birchgrove, was targeted.
Detective inspector Kavanagh appealed for anybody who witnesses suspicious behaviour at a house in their community to reach for the phone
He added: "The public are our eyes and ears so we would ask that any suspicious behaviour or individuals are brought to our attention immediately. We also want to hear about any jewellery being offered for sale in the community."
