Daniel Beatty was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of two offences of sexual assault and one offence of causing a child to watch a sexual act

A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexual offences against a child after “preying” on a child after buying gifts for the victim and sending them inappropriate Facebook messages.
Daniel Beatty, from Ariel Close, Newport , was convicted by a jury at Cardiff Crown Court of two offences of sexual assault and one offence of causing a child to watch a sexual act.
The court heard that the victim’s family had involved the authorities after becoming concerned about the nature of Beatty’s relationship with the child.
Beatty had purchased gifts for the victim and exchanged inappropriate messages via Facebook.

Convicted following trial

Following a police investigation, Beatty was arrested and charged.
He denied all the offences, but was convicted last month after a trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

He was sentenced on Thursday to three years imprisonment and made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order, which limits his ability to have unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.

'Preyed on his young victim'

Speaking after sentencing, Leanne Jonathan, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Wales Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said: “Beatty knew full well that his actions were entirely inappropriate. He preyed on his young victim in a cynical and unpleasant way, abusing the trust that his victim had placed in him.
“The victim’s family informed the authorities as soon as they sensed that the relationship was not as it should be. Their alertness to the issue, combined with the courage of the victim in providing the police with a full account of what happened, led to Beatty’s eventual conviction.
“As a result, Beatty has been made to face up to his actions in a criminal court and the authorities are now able to take steps to ensure that he is not able to carry out further offences of this nature.
