Teachers stepped in to protect the children from the attack in Cardiff's Trelai Park
Schoolchildren playing an inter-schools rugby match were attacked by a gang reportedly carrying knives and bats in a Cardiff park.
Pupils from Fitzalan High School and Glyn Derw/ Michaelston Federation were playing in Trelai Park, Ely, on Wednesday when a gang approached them and began attacking the teenagers.
One boy needed hospital treatment for a broken jaw and the windows of a school minibus were shattered during the terrifying attack.
Hero teachers have been praised for the way they dealt with the terrifying gang, who have no connection to either school.
Glyn Derw’s head of PE Rhyddian John and a group of PE teachers from Fitzalan stepped in front of the children to protect them.
South Wales Police have said that an investigation is under way and officers are currently following up a number of inquries.
The children playing in the match are now being offered support by their schools.
Police officers have also visited and are continuing to engage with both schools who had pupils involved in the rugby match.
One parent said: “It is absolutely terrifying that this can happen but it is great to hear how the teachers stepped in to help.”
Three boys, one aged 16 and two aged 15, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
They have since been released on police bail.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “It was reported that a group of males attacked school pupils who were involved in the match at approximately 4.15pm.
“One pupil required hospital treatment for injuries to his face and head.
“An investigation is under way and officers are currently following up a number of inquiries to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the incident in which weapons are believed to have been used.”
A spokesman for Cardiff council said: “Police were called to an incident during a rugby match between Fitzalan High School and Glyn Derw/ Michaelston Federation at Trelai Park on Wednesday afternoon when a number of individuals – not involved in the match – are believed to have assaulted some players.
“Both schools are now working to support the young people involved and a police investigation is now under way.”
The Welsh Ambulance Service said a rapid response paramedic and ambulance were sent to the park and a boy was taken to the University Hospital of Wales.
