A man was found in the street with serious head injuries in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
The man, aged 59 and from the Newport area, had serious head injuries – including a suspected skull fracture – and police are now investigating what happened.
The incident happened in Cambrian Grove in the Marshfields area of the city.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “At 2.40am on January 1 we responded to a report of a male person with serious injuries to the head."
The victim was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for treatment for his injuries.
He was expected to be released from hospital on Sunday afternoon.
