David Arwyn Owen, of the Gorwel estate, Amlwch admitted sexual assaulting his victim in Bangor
A 58-year-old man with a history of flashing has been jailed for a sex attack on a young woman.
David Arwyn Owen, of the Gorwel estate, Amlwch had admitted sexual assaulting his victim when he appeared before magistrates last month.
Caernarfon Crown Court heard today Owen had a previous conviction for exposing himself in a street in Bangor in March 2014 for which he received a three-year community order.
Following his latest crime a judge today revoked the order and sentenced Owen to three months jail to be served concurrently with the sexual assault term.
Jailing him for 28 months Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said she was satisfied there had been an element of pre-planning and thought by Owen.
“This was not significant but it is clear there was some forethought and this was not a spontaneous act.
“I am satisfied only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate,” she said.
Ffion Tomos, prosecuting, said Owen had called into the McDonald’s outlet in Bangor at about 4.30pm on December 10 and had met the 20-year-old woman and offered her a lift home.
“She accepted and during the initial part of the journey to Anglesey had asked about her work and whether she had a boyfriend.
“On the pretext of wanting to collect something the defendant pulled into the car park of a Chinese restaurant in Pentraeth but instead of getting out stayed in the vehicle and acted nervously asking if she could see anyone in the car parked alongside,” she said.
Owen then proceeded to carry out the assault but stopped and apologised when the woman asked him to stop.
When she unclipped her seat belt to get out of the vehicle Ms Tomos said Owen had tried to grab her arm.
Dafydd Roberts, defending, disputed this point stating Owen had been simply trying to apologise further to her and had not tried to grab her.
Once outside the vehicle she went to a nearby pub and alerted the police who took her home.
Owen was arrested later that evening and told officers he “hadn’t meant to do anything”. After being charged he told officers he had not meant to upset the young woman.
Mr Roberts told the court Owen had had time to reflect on his behaviour since being arrested and charged and is ashamed of himself.
“He tells me this will never happen again,” the lawyer said.
He pointed out Owen had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had made frank admissions to the police.
