An attacker who left his victim brain damaged in a dispute over a barking dog has been sentenced to life in prison.
Raymond Anthony Burrell, 38, attacked Matthew Sheehan who suffered 'horrendous injuries' and remains in a coma
Raymond Anthony Burrell, 38, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court for causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Matthew Sheehan.
Mr Sheehan, 34, is said to have suffered “horrendous injuries" to his head and body in the attack at his home in Adamsdown , Cardiff, on September 1 last year which has left him in a coma ever since.
'Our lives were turned upside down'
A statement on behalf of Matthew Sheehan’s family read: “On the September 1, 2015, Matthew’s and our lives were completely turned upside down when Raymond Burrell attacked our son.
“It is difficult for us to understand how someone could inflict such horrific injuries on another person, more so, on a vulnerable person who can’t even defend themselves.
“And when it is your own flesh and blood it has happened to it is even harder to deal with.
“We would like to thank all of the witnesses, the police both who tended to Matthew and led the investigation, and ultimately the paramedics and medical staff who have done everything they can to save Matthew’s life.
“We can now put all our focus onto being with Matthew and where possible, helping with his care.”
Burrell was given a life sentence by Judge Paul Thomas QC with a recommendation he seven a minimum eight years before being allowed to apply for parole.
'Truly horrific, brutal and repeated attack'
Detective Inspector Ian Bourne said: “Matthew Sheehan was effectively left for dead by Raymond Burrell after a truly horrific, brutal and repeated attack at Matthew’s own home.
“The sentence passed today indicates the severity of the unprovoked attack on Matthew and the sheer disregard Burrell had for anyone else other than himself.
“The dignity and bravery of the Sheehan family through their continuing ordeal has been truly humbling, and they and Matthew continue to live with their own life sentence.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped Matthew and our investigation, especially members of the local community who came forward and provided vital evidence.
“The actions of witnesses, police officers, paramedics and medical staff have clearly played a vital role in saving Matthew’s life. On behalf of South Wales Police I wish to offer my sincerest best wishes to Matthew and his family for their future and his continued care."
