Buckets labelled “public toilets” have been spotted on junctions throughout Gwynedd as part of a campaign to highlight the closure of public loos.
A total of 50 of the county’s 73 public toilets will shut in the coming months as part of£4.6m worth of cuts by Gwynedd Council.
The move has attracted criticism from tourism groups who believe it will harm trade in the county.
The white buckets have been spotted on main road roundabouts and junctions for the past week or so.
Written on them is: “ Gwynedd Council Emergency Public Toilet”.
It is not known who is behind the rogue buckets - or if they have been used.
Gwynedd Council have branded the buckets “dangerous”.
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Over the past few days, council officers have had to remove several buckets that have been left on main road roundabouts and junctions.
'Serious issue'
“As well as posing a dangerous distraction to motorists on the main road, clearing these littered items also take up the time and resources of the council’s staff.”
Cllr Eryl Jones-Williams, an independent who represents Dyffryn Ardudwy, abstained from approving the budget because of toilet concerns.
He said: “I cannot condone such behaviour but it is a novel way of drawing attention to what will be a serious problem for both the elderly and tourists.
“The exact toilets to be closed still have not been identified.
“I am really quite upset about what Gwynedd Council are doing shutting these toilets.
“I don’t know who is behind these buckets, it’s certainly not me, and I don’t encourage them, but it (lack of public toilets) will be a very serious issue before long.”
