A homeless man who once lived in a cave at Llandudno spat into a police officer's face, a court heard yesterday.
Raymond Burton, 53, had been approached by police after he twice on the same day stole from a shop at Llandudno.
Burton, who is on benefits, received a 20-week suspended jail term and must pay £250 compensation to the policeman. He was also ordered to pay £42 compensation to Bishpots Fine Foods and Wines and £200 costs.
Magistrates at Llandudno imposed a five-year criminal behaviour order.
Burton admitted assault and stealing bottles of liqueur on April 8.
Prosecutor James Neary said the officer had a tetanus injection and blood tests after the assault and was worried about his health.
Defence solicitor Nia Dawson said: ”Mr Burton is genuinely remorseful for his behaviour, particularly in respect of the police officer. He didn’t believe he spat in the direction of the officer. I have been able to show him video-cam footage.”
He had come out of prison determined not to drink and had been living in a tent. But Mrs Dawson said he bumped into acquaintances and started drinking on the day.
The solicitor added that Burton, who gave an address c/o Parc Bodnant, Llandudno, was due to move to a caravan at Llandudno Junction.
