A massive gorse fire in Gwynedd was finally put out nearly 10 hours after it had erupted on what had been the hottest day of the year so far .
The huge blaze on moorland in Fachwen, near Deiniolen, started at around 3pm yesterday and spread so much it covered a total of 300 acres – not far off the size of Hyde Park in London.
At its height, a total of 34 firefighters tackled the flames with crews from Caernarfon, Bangor and Llanberis in attendance.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed this morning that the cause of the massive blaze was down to a loss of controlled burning.
Initially, fire chiefs said the blaze had spread over an area of about 600 square metres.
But that estimate was rapidly revised upwards as the scale of the incident became clearer.
In total, 300 acres of gorse was damaged – more than 121,000 square metres or the equivalent of around 20 football pitches.
Gwynedd councillor Trevor Edwards said the fire was a “real cause for concern” for people in Fachwen.
No-one is believed to have been hurt in the incident.
Firefighters also dealt with a second gorse fire in the county at 12.12am.
The blaze in Mynydd Llandygai was much smaller in comparison, spanning 350sq metres, and was quickly dealt with.
