Anglesey,North Wales - Huge Gwynedd gorse fire not started by landowner

A massive gorse fire which raged through moorland in Gwynedd was not caused by the landowner.

Fire chiefs confirm farmer, who owns the land in Fachwen, was not responsible for causing the blaze

Farmer Dafydd Morris says the blaze started after controlled burning at a nearby property spread to his land, which he rents out.
The huge blaze on moorland in Fachwen near Deiniolen started at about 3pm on Wednesday and spanned 300 acres – not far off the size of Hyde Park in London.
Fire chiefs said the incident happened outside the controlled burning season , which finished at the end of March, and confirmed the landowner was not responsible for causing the fire.
Mr Morris, of Rhianfa, Deiniolen, said he and his bother were visiting their mother when the fire started and, as soon as he became aware of it, he helped firefighters to tackle the flames.
“We noticed a lot of smoke at 4pm and went up to Fachwen where it was well alight,” he said.
“We helped the fire brigade to put it out.
“We asked one of the lads how did it start. He said a resident had made a garden fire and it went out of control and on to our land. With the wind, it’s just gone.
“Every time we make a burn, we inform the fire service. We don’t burn at this time of the year.
“I’d like to thank the fire service for their help. They did a heck of a job in hard circumstances.”
At its height, a total of 34 firefighters tackled the flames , with crews from Caernarfon, Bangor and Llanberis in attendance.
No one was hurt in the incident.
