Llandudno,North Wales - Suspected Arson as Gorse fire breaks out on Great Orme Llandudno

Firefighters are using beaters to stop spread of blaze behind Abbey Road

A gorse fire has broken out on the Great Orme, Llandudno.

The fire broke out behind Abbey Road at around 4pm, affecting around 400 square metres of land.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent one crew from Llandudno who used beaters to quell the flames as smoke from the incident drifted across the town.
The cause of the fire has yet to be established.
An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: “There’s lots of smoke sweeping across the town. It looks like the fire is on common land. It doesn’t look like it’s a farm.
“There are a couple of police cars and a fire engine with half a dozen firefighters beating the gorse to put it out - it does look to be under control now though.”
The eyewitness said police had blocked off Abbey Road for about half an hour: “It’s open again now, and they have been going round trying to get information from locals.”
A spokesman for North Wales Fire Service said: “We had the call at 3.57pm and one fire appliance from Llandudno attended.
“There was approximately 400sq/m of of gorse on fire in an area near Abbey Road.
“The fire is out and officers are damping the area down.
“We are not sure of the cause of the fire yet.”
