These are the men and women sent to jail in Wales in 2016 for some of the most horrific crimes.
From serial sex offenders who preyed on the young and vulnerable to vicious predators and violent killers, they were given long sentences.
Here are the people sent to jail for the most depraved crimes last year.
Clive Davies
A newsagent who raped and sexually abused a series of young girls - some as young as 13.
Clive Gordon Davies from Port Talbot plied victims with alcohol and blackmailed and bullied them into submission.
A judge described his actions as "pure wickedness" and told him he had deprived his victims of their childhoods.
Davies, 74 when he was jailed for 15 years, subjected the girls to sustained and systematic sexual abuse over 10 years during the 1970s and 1980s.
Rhys Barnes
The 28-year-old from Newport was jailed for life after murdering a father-of-two by stabbing him 13 times and saying "I hope the ambulance takes ages and he dies".
Barnes and his victim Rhys Jones lived on the same corridor at a homeless shelter.

John Peters
The “monster” who subjected a young girl to nearly a decade of rape and sexual abuse, leaving her emotionally scarred for life, was jailed for 20 years.
The 79-year-old's victim – now 57 – said that she was robbed of her childhood by his offences and has never been able to shake off her feelings of shame and disgust.
Dean Edwards
The dangerous man threatened to set fire to a pet dog before assaulting and raping its owner. Cardiff Crown Court heard Dean Edwards, 39, hit his victim’s head against a wall and covered her mouth with his hand.
He was given an extended sentence of 12 years and the judge ordered that Edwards must serve at least eight years in prison before he can apply for parole.
Mark Richard Davis
Children’s entertainer Mark Richard Davis, also known as Mark Major, was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of raping one boy and indecently assaulting two others.
A Cardiff judge told him: “You befriended the boys and their families. You enticed them with the lure of the theatre and the magic you practiced as an entertainer.”
The court heard the offences occurred in the 1980s and 90s and related to three boys, who are now in their 30s.
Two were “vulnerable” due to their family circumstances and the judge said one of the boys viewed the entertainer as a “father figure”.
David Ellis
The lodger who brutally murdered his landlord with a hammer was jailed for life after being found guilty at Swansea Crown Court. He was told he must serve a minimum term of 26 years.
He dumped his victim's body 100ft down a quarry as part of a plan to steal rent money from other tenants.
Gordon Anglesea
The 79-year-old, who worked as a former North Wales police chief, was jailed at the end of last year for sexually abusing two teenagers.
The offences took place between 1982 and 1987, when both boys were aged 14 or 15 and Anglesea was an inspector with North Wales Police. He died in prison shortly after being sentenced and an investigation has now been launched into his death.
Philip Hudson-Jones and Adrian Iwanowski
The pair were sentenced to life for murdering a Polish drug dealer and then dismembering and burning his body.
Philip Hudson-Jones was jailed for 22 years for killing Mariusz Majewski at a house in Felinfoel, Llanelli , last November. Adrian Iwanowski was given a 15-year term.
Kial Ahmed
Murderer Kial Ahmed was given life imprisonment for the murder of Cardiff mum Nadia Jones, 38, at her flat in Tremorfa .
Roxanne Deacon, 27, was also sentenced for her role in the mother-of-one’s death after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Kris Wade
The killer who slit a grandmother's throat in her Cardiff Bay flat was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years.
Wade had pleaded guilty earlier this month to the murder of Christine James , who was found dead in her fourth-floor flat in Century Wharf on March 2.
Jack Williams
The 19-year-old was jailed after he beat and brutally raped a woman in her 60s on a beach.
The victim, who suffered serious injuries, believed she was about to be killed and said the "horrendous experience will only end when I am in the grave".
Sean Buckley
The 28-year-old was jailed for life at Cardiff Crown Court after being convicted of murdering "defenceless" 17-month-old Finley Thomas, from the Rhondda . He left the toddler with a fractured skull and broken ribs as he murdered the little boy in a catalogue of violence.
James Williams
The 31-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years after being found guilty of the murder of Russell Peachey in Grangetown, Cardiff.
Williams launched a savage attack on his victim and left him to die in the street.

Raymond Burrell
The attacker who left his victim brain damaged in a dispute over a barking dog was sentenced to life in prison.
Raymond Anthony Burrell, 38, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court for causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Matthew Sheehan in Cardiff on September 1 last year.
But Burrell has a long history of violence. In 1993 he was imprisoned for seven years for shooting his teenage girlfriend through the heart. He left the dying girl to call an ambulance herself. He had also stabbed two nightclub doormen in Cardiff after being refused entry to a club.
Maria Hopes
The only woman on the list. She was jailed for life with a minimum of 17 years for the brutal killing of her husband Mark.
Mr Hopes, who married his wife in March 2011, was beaten to death in the living room of his home so violently that blood spattered up the wall.
Leon Port
Maria Hopes' son, the 24-year-old was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years for the murder of his stepfather in what was described in court as a "nasty and brutal attack".
Gareth Vincent Hall
The Welsh lifeguard was jailed for 50 years in the United States after admitting raping a 10-year-old girl.
The 22-year-old from Talysarn, near Caernarfon, was arrested in May 2015.
He admitted four counts of first-degree rape, two of first-degree sodomy, and one of first-degree online sexual corruption of a child.
Stephen Pike
The 59-year-old was found by police mopping up blood after he fatally stabbed dad-of-five Clint Simms in Ely, Cardiff. He was jailed for life with a minimum of 20 years behind bars.
He claimed he was acting in self-defence, but was found guilty of murder by a jury following a two-week trial at Cardiff Crown Court .
Luke George Jones
The 33-year-old was sentenced to life with a minimum of 17 years after being found guilty of the murder of Natasha Bradbury at her Haverfordwest home.
During the trial the court had heard Ms Bradbury’s lifeless body was found at her home in Haverfordwest on February 22 after the property had been “smashed up”.
Sammy Almahri
The American businessman was jailed for life with a minimum of 17 years for the murder of Cardiff student Nadine Aburas in a Cardiff hotel room.
He went on the run after the murder before being tracked down to Tanzania.
Jake Vallely
The amateur boxer who boasted of being the hardest man in Brecon has been sentenced to life with a minimum of 16 years behind bars for the murder of a young soldier.
Jake Vallely was convicted of the murder of Private Matthew Boyd, 20, of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, in the early hours of May 8.
Ronald Preddy
The 73-year-old, from Port Talbot's Upper Afan Valley, was jailed for 18 years after a judge branded him "a remorseless sexual predator".

Martin McDonald
The paedophile rapist who filmed his sex attacks for a hidden collection of depraved videos at his farmhouse was jailed for 22 years at Cardiff Crown Court.
Police found hundreds of home-made rape tapes the carpenter had made of his attacks on a schoolgirl. McDonald used the girl as a sex object - repeatedly raping and indecently assaulting for more than 15 years.
Peter Morgan
One of the most notorious murder trials of 2016 ended before Christmas with the conviction of millionaire Peter Morgan for the murder of his escort girlfriend Georgina Symonds. He strangled her.

Robert Owens
He was jailed for life in November after he admitted killing his elderly mother with a chainsaw at their home in Ystrad Mynach. It was later revealed that he was a heroin dealer who tried to flood Aberystwyth with drugs.
Sylvan Parry
The dad was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of trying to kill his wife as they walked their children to school in Caernarfon.
The 46-year-old repeatedly stamped on his wife Fiona's head in a vicious attack on September 3 last year – the first day of the new school term.
Kyle Kennedy
The driver who killed a father and his newborn son in a head-on crash in Cardiff was jailed for 12 years.
Kyle Kennedy, 29, was found guilty of causing the deaths of Simon Lewis and Simon Junior – who was unborn at the time of the crash – by dangerous driving on New Year’s Eve.
After the jury returned two guilty verdicts it emerged Kennedy was banned from driving at the time of the crash and had a string of previous convictions – including for trying to run down a policeman with a motorcycle.
Rhys Hobbs
Hobbs was sentenced to 12 years in jail for killing his partner Andrea Lewis in a "brutal and sustained" attack.
The mother-of-two was found by police and paramedics "soaking wet and cold to the touch" and covered in bruises on the kitchen floor of a property in Tonna, near Neath, on the morning of January 30. His brutal attack left her with 41 injuries ranging from broken ribs to a serious head wound.
Hobbs had been violent toward his partners in at least four previous relationships.
Mark Stephens
The alcoholic businessman was jailed for life for the murder of his frail mother after she criticised his drinking and poor running of the family furniture firm.
