The scheme is part of a two week trial to support and protect 'a very vulnerable part of the community'
A pop-up shelter offering overnight accommodation for the vulnerable homeless community is currently being trialled.
The facility at the former English Baptist Church hall on Great Orme’s Road, Llandudno, is part of a project involving The Lighthouse Community and Hope Restored as well as North Wales Police and Conwy Council.
The two week trial involves the shelter being offered three to four days a week for up to eight people, with the church open until 10.15pm, when the doors are closed until the morning.
Until now the nearest overnight shelters available were in Rhyl or Bangor.
Brenda Fogg, founder of Hope Restored, said: “Since founding Hope Restored it has been my dream to open an overnight shelter for the homeless, as the nearest places they can go to is Rhyl or Bangor.
“This pop-up shelter is being trialled over three or four days over a period of two weeks.”
She added: “We’ve already done one night, and there were no problems at all.
“At present there are four registered homeless people with Hope Restored, and they will be the ones who will be offered shelter in the church hall, which is now the Lighthouse Community Centre.”
North Wales Police is stepping up patrols in the area in order to reassure the residential community.
Safer Neighbourhood team Sergeant Parry said: “North Wales Police believes it matters to them not only to listen to the community it serves but to equally protect all of its community and visitors alike.
“The homeless community are a very vulnerable part of the community with individuals who find it difficult to reach out and ask for help, this shelter helps them grab the hand that cares.
“Brenda from Hope Restored is working in partnership with other agencies and has asked North Wales Police along for advice to ensure that everything is done not only to protect the vulnerable homeless members of the community but to equally support and reassure the local community that she is doing everything she can to ensure it’s run without incident.”
Sergeant Parry added: “We will continue to monitor the use of the shelter and will take a zero tolerance of any anti-social behaviour.
“Brenda opened the shelter up for one night last Sunday night, and North Wales Police received no calls that night in relation to the shelter.
“We will also increase our patrols to reassure the local community.”
