Police were called to a Cardiff primary school after pupils reported seeing a man with what they believed was a knife near the school grounds.
Officers were at Ysgol Y Berllan Deg in Llanedeyrn within minutes of the alarm being raised at around 10.45am on Tuesday.
A police spokesman described it as a “precautionary procedure”.
The Welsh primary school and neighbouring schools were advised to keep children indoors while initial inquiries were carried out.
After an investigation parents were informed that there was “no cause for concern”.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “This instruction was stood down when it was ascertained that no actual threats had been made to the children.
“Inquiries to identify the man and to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing but advice to parents is to be vigilant but not to be alarmed.”
Safety 'of the utmost importance
A letter sent out from the school on Tuesday said: “The police came to the school today as some pupils reported a person acting suspiciously outside the top gate.
“The school contacted the police immediately and the matter was dealt with. There is no cause for concern.”
Head teacher Mari Phillips said: “The safety of our pupils is of the utmost importance and we asked the police to come to the school after we had reports of a person acting suspiciously nearby.
“The matter was swiftly dealt with and there was found to be no further cause for concern.”
