Cardiff Crown Court heard Dean Edwards, 39, hit his victim’s head against a wall and covered her mouth with his hand.
Judge Michael Fitton QC told the defendant: “Your history makes it plain to me that you do present a risk of violence and now sexual violence to women.”
Facial injuries
The court heard the incident occurred on April 3 and the victim suffered injuries to her face and arms.
Prosecutor Byron Broadstock said the woman managed to send a text message to someone who was able to call the police.
He said Edwards, from Whitehall Parade in Rumney , Cardiff, was under the influence of drink and drugs at the time of the offences.
The defendant denied rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but was found guilty by a jury after a trial.
Mr Broadstock said Edwards had more than 20 previous convictions, including many for offences of violence, with multiple assaults on women.
The court heard his offending started when he was 18 and he had previously stabbed a man in the neck, with other offences including affray, battery and robbery.
'There is another side to him'
Hugo Lodge, defending, said his client had sustained worse injuries than the victim and stressed he had no previous convictions for sexual offences.
He added: “There is another side to Dean Edwards. The women in his life have stood by him throughout the trial and again today.”
The court heard the offences were committed while he was on licence for robbery.
Judge Fitton said he judged the woman to be “vulnerable”.
Showed 'no remorse'
He told the defendant: “You still deny the offences and it is quite clear that you show no remorse.
“You are a person unwilling to accept real criticism of yourself or the need to reform your behaviour.”
The judge noted the range of his offending was “considerable” and that he had committed “many” offences of violence towards women.
He added: “What is of particular concern is that there is no significant diminution in your offending – in fact the seriousness of your offending is increasing.”
Judge Fitton passed an extended sentence of 12 years and ordered that Edwards must serve at least eight years in prison before he can apply for parole.
An indefinite restraining order was imposed and he must register as a sex offender.
