Swansea,South Wales - Jail for man who made threatening phone calls to father of ex-partner in Swansea

Nicholas Griffin was jailed for a total of 23 months at Swansea Crown Court
A MAN with a history of violence who made a series of abusive and threatening phone calls to the father of his former partner — then launched an unprovoked attack on his neighbour — has been jailed.
Swansea Crown Court heard that Nicholas Philip John Griffin has a long history of violent offending which started when he was just 16, and which includes wounding, battery, actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm, possessing an offensive weapon and attempted robbery.
Dean Pulling, prosecuting, said that on September 11 Griffin made a series of abusive and expletive-laden phone calls to the father of his ex-partner in Gorseinon, telling him he was "coming down with six blokes" to give him a good hiding.
Police were called, and at one stage 32-year-old Griffin rang while an officer was in the victim's house — the policeman took the phone and identified himself, and Griffin then made sexual threats against the PC's family.
The court heard Griffin continued to make a series of calls from a mobile phone during the course of that evening, most of which the victim allowed to go to answer machine, and some of which were played in evidence.
Mr Pulling said that at around 10.30pm that night a bare-chested Griffin — "sweating profusely and smelling of alcohol — then got out of his BMW and confronted a neighbour on the street where he lived, shouting in the man's face before punching him in the head.
Griffin, of Emily Fields, Birchgrove, had previously pleaded guilty to sending malicious communications and to assault by beating when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.
The court heard Griffin has previous convictions for some 22 offences - seven of which are for violence - including for hitting someone over the head with a metal pole when he was aged 16, head-butting a security guard at a fast food restaurant, and punching a man in the face outside the New Lodge social club in Gorseinon after he had been thrown out of the premises. He also has convictions for matters including attempted robbery and public order offences.
Stuart John, for Griffin, accepted the phone messages had been "deplorable", but added that his client had issues with his ex-partner's father.
The advocate said Griffin had been studying cooking at Gower College Swansea, and had instructed him that he had been clean of drug "for some time". He added that Griffin was in a stable relationship with a woman who worked as a teacher.
Judge Keith Thomas told Griffin that he took his anger out on people who did not deserve it.
He said: "Anybody who stands up to you or crosses your path in a way you do not like, is pushed around and bullied, and eventually assaulted by you."
The judge activated 18 months of a previously imposed 21 month suspended sentence which been handed down to Griffin for GBH, and sentenced the defendant to two months for sending the malicious messages and three months for assaulting his neighbour, all the sentences to run consecutively making a total of 23 months.
Griffin was also made the subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting his ex's father or his neighbour.
