A woman ended up in court on animal cruelty charges after leaving a dog in a hot conservatory with no water.
Emma Marie Stevens pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Cruelty Act for her treatment of female brown and white boxer crossbreed Bella. She also failed to investigate why Bella was losing so much weight.
The RSPCA had called to her home in June and found Bella living in the conservatory of an unoccupied property, without any water, while her owner was in the process of moving out.
She was taken straight to a vet and was found to be dehydrated and emaciated, weighing just 11kg.
Fortunately, Bella has now been found a new home.
Stevens, 29, of Maes Y Deri in Talybont, near Aberystwyth, was fined £200 by Aberystwyth magistrates for the two charges, plus costs of £300 and a victim surcharge of £30, bringing the total costs to £730.
RSPCA inspector Holly Brown said: “The poor dog was so skinny, and bones were visible across her body. It is horrible to think what she went through.
“Her body condition was very poor, and the owner failed to address this.
“Leaving a dog in a space like a conservatory is very dangerous. This sad case is an important reminder as to the dangers of leaving dogs in hot, enclosed spaces.
“This suffering was completely unnecessary, but thankfully the dog has now found a loving new home, and is settling in well. Her new family are absolutely lovely and are very taken with her - so thankfully this story has a happy ending.”
