Simon Ferguson jailed for attacking man who was unloading his shopping into boot of car

A heroin addict tried to rob a shopper as he was loading his car outside a supermarket.
'Desperate' Simon Ferguson pushed Noel Williams into the boot of his car as he was unloading his shopping outside Morrison’s supermarket in Rhyl
Mr Williams banging his head as Ferguson attacked him, and he felt a hand tugging at his wallet.
But Mr Williams bravely fought back and grabbed him by the throat.
During the struggle that followed, Ferguson tripped him up and he fell to the ground, again banging his head, prosecutor Emmalyne Downing told Mold Crown Court today.

Ferguson carried out a 'frightening attack'

The men then scuffled across the parking bays, stopping other traffic in the car park, as Mr Williams’ wife shouted at Ferguson to stop.
Mr Williams realised at that stage that he still had his wallet and let Ferguson go and then went back inside the supermarket.
Witnesses had already informed supermarket security staff about what had happened and they detained Ferguson until the police arrived.
Ferguson, 26, of no fixed abode, admitted an attempted robbery charge and was jailed for 21 months.

Victim showed bravery and resisted him

Judge Niclas Parry said that no doubt in “desperation”, Ferguson carried out what was “a frightening attack” on an innocent man.
To his credit, the victim “showed fortitude and resisted him”, the judge added.
Other people were present in what was a very public place and they were alarmed.
Defending barrister Simon Killeen said that his client was realistic and knew that he was going into custody.
Ferguson, who appeared in court via a live television link from Altcourse Prison, had a drugs problem, Mr Killeen said.
“He got into debt. He was put under pressure to pay that debt. On the spur of the moment he did something that he had never done before.
“He knows that whatever his problems he has to go into custody,” the barrister added.
