A man has gone on trial accused of targeting women in student accommodation in the ‘dead of night’ in a bid to rape and sexually assault ‘drunk’ students.
Tahir Nazir is alleged to have broken into a student house in Cardiff through a bathroom window.
He is also accused of targeting other university towns before being caught in Manchester.
The 40-year-old from Glasgow denies trespass with intent to commit an offence, sexual assault, attempted rape, and three charges of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence at Manchester Crown Court.
DNA tests taken by Greater Manchester Police after his arrest linked Nazir to other offences in Wales, the court heard.
'Sexually predatory behaviour targeted at university undergraduate females'
It is alleged that in the early hours of September 22 a visitor to a student house in Cardiff awoke to find Mr Nazir “on top” of her “very drunk” friend.
The court heard that Mr Nazir and the girl in Cardiff are said to have fallen out of bed.
After leaving he is alleged to have returned to pester and ‘proposition’ them before other housemates told him to go.
It is alleged he smashed the bathroom window to get in, the Manchester Evening News reports .
Opening the case, prosecutor Henry Blackshaw said: “Evidence shows him travelling from Scotland down into England, through England and down into Wales – all part of sexually predatory behaviour targeted at university undergraduate females. Not just targeting them in general, but targeting them within accommodation.
“During the dead of night he breaks into accommodation using one device or another, and then having done that, on two of the occasions, sexually attacks females who are asleep in their beds.”
The court heard he was arrested after girls in a shared house in the Fallowfield area of Manchester became concerned that someone was trying the doors to their room, and began texting and Facebook messaging each other about it at 4.40am.
Police were called and Nazir was arrested nearby, Mr Blackshaw said.
Six days before that - in the hours after Halloween - it is alleged he tried to rape a student at New Lawrence House, Hulme, Manchester, after sneaking into the property behind a drunken young woman.
It’s alleged she shut the door before he could get in, so he then went up and down the corridors looking for open doors.
'Woman woke up to find Nazir licking her neck'
Eventually a young woman woke up to find Nazir licking her neck while ‘naked from the waist down’ and thrusting himself against her.
He is alleged to have fled the address once challenged - but then tried to get into other rooms in a ‘somewhat sexually frustrated and aroused state’.
Nazir was linked to the Hulme attack by DNA from the girl’s neck after he was arrested in Fallowfield, the court heard.
Police found empty packets of viagra in his car, a fake Glasgow University ID and receipts said to reveal he had been “travelling up and down the country”.
He is alleged to have done internet searches for “high school girls” and “Freshers Week”.
Blackshaw said Freshers Week was a “time of year when students are full of excitement, getting drunk, no doubt providing easier targets”.
Mr Nazir denies all the allegations, saying he was invited back to the halls in Cardiff and Hulme, and that he was looking for a drug dealer who had ripped him off in Fallowfield.
The case continues.
