John William Morris, 43, who had 170 previous convictions,  said he would not stop because he feared being assaulted by officers

A driver being chased by the police called 999 and said he would not stop because he feared being assaulted by officers.
Defendant John William Morris, 43, led officers straight to Wrexham police station - but not before jumping a red light.
Morris, of no fixed abode but who comes from Wrexham , changed his plea and admitted dangerous driving on December 28 last year.
He was jailed for 10 months, consecutive to a sentence he is already serving for other offences. He was banned from driving for two years – and must undergo an extended driving test.
Judge Niclas Parry, sitting at Mold Crown Court, told him the only thing more shocking than his driving was his criminal record – he had previous convictions for 170 offences.

Bad driving

Judge Parry told him he had four decades of stealing, and three decades of road traffic offences including 23 offences for driving while disqualified.
He was only just out of a long custodial sentence for burglary when the latest incident occurred – when he was on bail.
“All of that aggravates what was a prolonged period of bad driving, which involved a police chase,” he said.
He crossed centre white lines on blind bends, ignored warning signs and drove through a red light.
But there was no collision and the speeds involved were not of the highest.
Morris also admitted taking the Nissan Almera car he was driving from Benjamin Road, failing to stop, no insurance and no licence.

Police pursuit

Prosecutor David Mainstone said that the car was spotted at 2am by officers who at a layby at Cross Lanes with two men inside and pulled up in front of it.
But Morris who was driving, reversed, then drove around it and away. He was pursued along the B5130 where he crossed centre white lines.
He drove onto the wrong side on a blind bend on the A528 towards Marchweil and continued to cross centre white lines and drive at excessive speed towards Wrexham.
It appeared the was going to stop at Hightown where police were preparing to deploy a stinger device but he a sped away.
Morris then made a 999 call and was instructed by the operator to stop but he refused and claimed he feared he would be assaulted if he did so.
It was pointed out he could injure himself and others but he said he was not driving fast and would drive straight to Wrexham police station.
Paul Abraham, defending, said when his client drove through the red traffic light there was a police car at junction which would have prevented any other traffic from entering.

Previous convictions

It was accepted he had a bad record and “pages and pages” of previous convictions – but nothing for dangerous driving.
“He indicated that he was refusing to stop because he feared potential violence from the police officers,” said Mr Abraham.
Whether there was any basis for that was another matter. “It was probably in his head and nowhere else. There was no proper reason for him to come to that conclusion,” he said.
He drove at a proper speed in the built up areas as he made his way to the police station after indicating that he would do so
