A CRUEL couple have been jailed for hitting their children with fly swatters.

The parents disciplined their five children with the insect swatters whenever they misbehaved at home.

A court heard that the violent couple were "inadequate parents who used excessive discipline" when telling off their five youngsters.

Judge Neil Bidder QC said: "The lives of these children must have been miserable.

"The children lived in poor conditions and were often not fed breakfast in the morning.

"You are inadequate parents who concentrated on your own selfish needs."

Both parents, of Blaenau Gwent, pleaded guilty to give five counts of child neglect at Newport Crown Court.

The father was jailed for two years and eight months while the mother was sentenced to two years and four months.
