A PRIMARY school in Llanelli has been broken into by thieves who stole £1,000 in cash.
Pentip Voluntary Aided Church in Wales Primary School, on the town's Pembrey Road, has fallen victim to a burglary.
The incident took place overnight between yesterday and this morning.
A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powsy Police said: "Police are investigating a burglary at Pentip Primary School in Llanelli.
"Someone has broken into the school and has stolen approximately £1,000 in cash."
Pentip Primary School's head teacher Andrew Thomas was unavailable to comment on the incident.
But, a member of staff confirmed that the children were at school and had visited church this afternoon, where Mr Thomas would have likely been speaking to concerned parents.
Parents have suggested that the break-in may have taken place at the rear of the building through a door onto the school yard.
The Evening Post contacted the Church in Wales for a comment, but received no response.
A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "The scene has been preserved for forensic examination to take place and officers are conducting enquiries in the area."
Local councillor for the Elli ward, councillor John Jenkins said: "It's a shock to hear that a school has been targeted — I hope it isn't a sign of things to come in the current economic climate.
"It certainly is not very Christmassy.
"Almost every other school in Carmarthenshire is surrounded by all of this ugly green security fencing and it would be a shame if Pentip had to go the same way."
Anyone who witnessed or thinks they have any information about the burglary at Pentip is urged to call Dyfed-Powys Police in Llanelli on 101 or alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
