POLICE in Cimla have stepped up patrols following a spate of burglaries in the area.
Before Christmas, South Wales Police revealed there had been more than 25 burglaries in the county in just one month, but more break-ins have taken place in the new year — many of these in Cimla.
Some of the streets hit by burglars include Treballen Avenue, Woodview and the Meadows.
Other areas in Neath Port Talbot, which have seen a rise in the number of crimes of this type in recent months, are Baglan, Sandfields and Port Talbot.

Cimla councillor John Warman said: "There have been quite a number of burglaries in the Cimla, which has caused some concern in the community."
Mr Warman said he was concerned that the same person or gang of people were targeting homes in the area.
He said since the spate of burglaries began before Christmas, there had been more police officers out and about in the area.
"The police have been very good — I have noticed a visible presence since this has happened," he said.
"There has been some response from the public, who have been reporting any suspicious activity they see to the police."
Mr Warman added: "We rely on public co-operation, so I would urge anyone who sees anything suspicious in Cimla to contact the police.
"I hope the perpetrators get caught promptly."
South Wales Police confirmed that it had been increasing the number of patrols in the Cimla and Neath Port Talbot area in a bid to catch the culprits.
This week, police conducted a high-visibility operation in the area, where officers from the neighbourhood policing team and community safety department visited householders offering crime prevention advice.
More than 250 homes were visited, and their presence within the area was well received by residents.
Neath Port Talbot Sergeant Tim Barrell, who led the operation, said: "While crime in the area is low, we as a local policing team are always looking to remind people to take simple steps to reduce the chances of being a victim of crime.
"A third of burglaries in the area are through insecure doors, so simple measures such as locking your front door can reduce your chances of being burgled.
"I would encourage people to join their local neighbourhood watch scheme, and to report any suspicious activity to the police."

On Saturday afternoon, police were still in the area and had cordoned off a section of woodland.
Gwent Police officers are currently treating the death as unexplained and a Post Mortem examination will take place on Monday, a spokesman said.

Tributes paid

Hundreds of people have been paying tribute to the baby on social media. One Facebook user, Natalie Morris, wrote: “So sad and heartbreaking. Rest in peace little one, gone way to soon, fly high with the angels.”

Appeal made in October after 'unassisted birth'

In October last year, Gwent Police appealed for information saying a mother and newborn baby could be in need of "urgent medical attention" following what they believed to be an unassisted birth on the outskirts of Newport.
The investigation was launched in Penhow after a female was believed to have given birth without any medical assistance or supervision in the open air in Parc Seymour, Penhow.
Police made a further appeal regarding the case in January saying they have been unable to trace the mother and believed the baby may have died.
The evidence of the birth was discovered by a dog walker and has been forensically and medically examined.
Speaking at the time of the appeal in January, Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Ruth Price said: “It is very sad to have to accept that we are now working on the basis that the baby, believed to have been a little girl, didn’t survive and that for whatever reason, her mother and anyone else who knows anything about her pregnancy or birth have not sought any help.”
Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 126 19/10/15 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Wrexham,North Wales - Man jailed after having £40,000 worth criminal cash paid into his bank account

Francis Joseph Berry, 35 of no fixed abode but originally from the Wrexham area, was sentenced to 14 months in jail yesterday after admitting money laundering.

Homeless Francis Joseph Berry, 35, was sentenced to 14 months in prison yesterday after he admitted money laundering

A homeless man on benefits had more than £40,000 worth of criminal cash deposited into his bank account.
Francis Joseph Berry, 35 of no fixed abode but originally from the Wrexham area, was sentenced to 14 months in jail yesterday after admitting money laundering.
He initially denied the charge but changed his plea as the trial started at Mold Crown Court.
Sentencing him, Judge Niclas Parry said that Berry could have been sentenced to serve two years behind bars if he had not been pleaded guilty.
“Without people like you, serious crime would not be committed,” added Judge Parry.
Berry was interviewed by North Wales Police in June 2015 after a financial investigation which showed that unexplained deposits which had been paid into his bank account.
Despite him having no job and income aside from benefits, the court heard money in varying amounts had been paid into his account at monthly intervals over an 11 month period.
The total deposited into Berry’s account came to £40,600 but yesterday he was ordered to pay back the £22,585.21 found in the account at the time of the investigation within three month.
Detective Inspector Arwyn Jones of the force’s Operation Scorpion Team who tackle Serious and Organise Crime added: “This is another example of how North Wales Police will actively pursue criminals and will use the powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act to strip offenders of any property, including their homes, cars and cash that they possess,” said detective inspector Arwyn Jones of the Operation Scorpion Team, dedicated to tackling organised crime.
“We want the assistance of the public to bring these people to justice and any information will be taken seriously and appropriate action will be taken.”
North Wales Police Financial Investigator, Jessica Cunnah stated: “North Wales Police are sending out the message that those involved in criminality of this nature will have their assets taken from them when they are caught and convicted.”
Berry is currently in prison serving a two year sentence for wounding.
He had been due to be released from jail prior to yesterday’s sentencing but will now serve more time behind bars.

Caernarfon,North Wales - Man claims car vandalised in dog mess row

Jim Holman claims his wing mirror was damaged in a row over dog mess
Jim Holman claims his wing mirror was damaged in a row over dog mess

The wing mirror of  Jim Holman's vehicle was snapped off after he put up a sign urging dog walkers to clean up any mess left by their pets

A Caernarfon man has had his car vandalised in what he claims is a row over dog muck.
Jim Holman believes wing mirror of his silver Peugeot 307 car was snapped off in retaliation after he put up a sign urging walkers to clean up after their dogs.
The incident comes just two days after Mr Holman placed up the sign at his house on Constantine Road.
The sign shows an image of a dog doing its business and reads: “Clean it up, you are being watched.”
Jim, who lives with his partner Jennifer Jones, said: “I received a call from my partner at 9.30am on Friday morning saying the wing mirror of my car had been snapped off.
Arwyn RobertsThe damaged wing mirror

“The mirror has been totally damaged and I’ve had to put tape over it. It will have to be replaced at a cost of £150.
Mr Holman, who has reported the incident to the police, said he put up the sign after becoming annoyed with the dog mess in the area.
He said: “It is everywhere. I’ve got two dogs myself and I always take bags and pick up after them.
“But there are a minority of people who don’t sadly, which just makes the area look a mess and it’s a health hazard.

“So I got annoyed, downloaded an image from the internet of a dog doing a mess and stuck up a sign outside my front gate.
“Something really does need to be done. I’ve phoned the council asking for this problem to be dealt with.
He added: “I feel sure that my decision to put up the sign is linked to my wing mirror being vandalised.
“It was like someone was saying to me that they’re not being told what to do.
“These people are irresponsible. I won’t be taking the sign down.”

North Wales,UK - Child criminals carry out robberies and sexual offences shock new figures show

Young children have committed crimes such as robberies and sexiual offences
Young children have committed crimes such as robberies and sexiual offences

Kids aged between 10 and 17 years committed more than 1,000 crimes

Children aged 14 or even younger committed robberies and sexual offences in Wales last year, new figures show.
The data, compiled by the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales, show that young people aged between 10 and 14 either admitted to or were convicted of 10 robberies and 46 sexual offences in Wales in 2014/15.
In total, young people between 10 and 17 years old in North Wales, were proven to have committed 1,173 crimes last year.
Nationally, the figure is 4,546 crimes.
Young people in Wrexham were the most likely to get into trouble in North Wales, with 449 proven crimes committed, followed by Conwy and Denbighshire with 321, Gwynedd and Anglesey with 235 and Flintshire with 268.
The age of criminal responsibility in Wales is 10 years old - children any younger can’t be charged with a crime.
Councillor Keith Gregory, who represents Smithfield on Wrexham Council, said that anti-social behaviour amongst young people on the Caia Park estate was a big problem.
He said: “These figures are really bad. We all know there are problems from arson and I know that in Caia Park, all sorts of things have been tried to combat this.
“We have had extra PCSO’s and people from the Caia Park Partnership going around the estate chatting to groups of people at nighttime.
“But we need to start policing the estate a lot more with proper police, not just PCSO’s.
A spokesman for NSPCC Cymru said they were aware that many sex offences against children are committed by their peers.
The spokesman added: “We know many sex offences against children are committed by their peers and it’s crucial that work continues, to understand why this behaviour is adopted.
“Ensuring these young people receive treatment and boosting the availability of support for their victims is key.
“Easy access to sexual material can warp young people’s views of what is ‘normal’ or acceptable behaviour and more must be done to help shield children from the effects of that.
“This week NSPCC Cymru launched a new campaign calling for boosted access to child and adolescent mental health services in Wales, after our research showed professional concerns over long delays and inadequate provision.”
Statistics also show that the most common crime for young Welsh people to be caught doing was violence against the person, which accounted for a fifth of the 4,546 offences commited.
There were 724 cases of young Welsh people stealing or handling stolen goods, 404 motoring offences and 24 cases of fraud or forgery.
Some 83% of these crimes were committed by boys.
Proven youth crime has come down by 70% across England and Wales since 2004/05.
