A WOMAN punched a frightened pensioner repeatedly in a sustained attack.
Sherry Thomas, 37, of White Lion Close, Summerhill, attacked an 84-year-old man in a pub car park after she had been drinking.
Thomas admitted assaulting her victim in the car park of the King William pub,Summerhill, on November 17.
Sentencing her to a community order at Wrexham Magistrates Court, Lady Sally Kenyon described the attack as “despicable”.
Andrew Slight, prosecuting, said the assault happened as the victim went to his car.
He said: “He saw the defendant lying under the front of his car.
“She refused to move and after repeated requests he went to get in the driver’s seat so she would believe he was about to start the car, to encourage her to move away. As he attempted to get out he was grabbed by the throat, pulled to the ground and punches and blows rained down on his body.
“Due to his age and fragility he curled up in a ball while the attacks continued and pleaded to stop.
“A friend of the defendant intervened and very fortunately the injuries were relatively minor.
“The victim experienced discomfort, soreness and was extremely frightened.”
Justine McVitie, defending, said Thomas had never been before the court prior to this.
She said: “It was totally out of character. She remembers very little of the attack, was out with a friend and consumed more alcohol than was good for her.
“My client is genuinely remorseful and cannot believe she behaved that way.
“She has been struggling recently, and has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression.”
Magistrates sentenced Thomas to a 12-month community order and made her pay £250 in compensation to the victim.
She was also fined £140 and told to pay £85 court costs and a £30.
Sentencing Thomas, chair of the bench, Lady Sally Kenyon said: “What you did was despicable, he was a vulnerable, elderly gentleman and your attack was sustained.
“The court takes a very dim view of this behaviour.”
