Conwy,North Wales - Conwy crime wave sparks questions about police numbers

Llandudno Junction councillor Mike Priestley said he was concerned about victims of crime in the wake of a string of burglaries in the Deganwy and Llandudno Junction area

Fears have been raised over the level of policing in Conwy, after a crime wave hit two of the county’s wards.
Over the past month there have been eight burglaries in the Deganwy and Llandudno Junction area.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incidents.
And last month the Daily Post spoke to a woman whose house had been burgled on Albert Drive.
She offered a £1,000 reward for the safe return of her late father’s jewellery which had been stolen.
The 36-year-old woman described the distress the incident had caused her, which had left her terrified to live in her home.
Llandudno Junction councillor Mike Priestley said he was concerned about the victims.
He said: “I want to know what the police are doing to support victims of crime.
“I know one of the burglary victims feels the need to be barricading herself in her own home.
“I’m very concerned about the level of policing in Conwy, there used to be two community beat officers just for Llandudno Junction alone, but now there’s only one that covers a massive area of Conwy, which is of great concern.”

West Conwy Inspector Kelly Isaacs confirmed there had been an 8.3% increase in crime during the period from April until now, meaning 48 more crimes have been recorded in Penmaen, Deganwy, Conwy, Pensarn and Capelulo wards.
Inspector Isaacs said while it was true there was only one community beat officer who covers quite a large part of Conwy, the officer had five PCSO’s to support them.
The officer said: “Also very recently I’ve put a patrol officer based from Conwy police station, before that they were covering Conwy from Llandudno.
“I totally agree being a victim of burglary has a massive impact, and we did put in massive resources assigned to the burglaries.

“Crime reduction officers have been in the areas affected, police cadets have dropped leaflets and extra patrols were put in, but people need to realise we do live in a relatively low crime area although I understand people would like to see more police officers.”
