Ian John Taylor, 28, of Crescent Close, ripped guttering from his home and threatened paramedics with it, after waking up while they were treating him
Paramedics had to lock themselves in the back of an ambulance for safety after an unconscious man they were treating woke up and started smashing up the vehicle.
Ian John Taylor, 28, of Crescent Close, Wrexham , ripped guttering from his home and threatened the paramedics with it, hurled items around the ambulance, and tried to let the brake off in a rampage which caused damage worth £1,000 to the vehicle.
Two paramedics locked themselves in the back of the ambulance and another went into a fast response vehicle for safety, Flintshire magistrates’ court heard.
Taylor appeared from custody at a special Christmas Eve court and said he could not remember anything about the incident.
He admitted damaging the ambulance on Thursday night, using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence, and causing £300 of damage to his home, which is owned by Wrexham council .
Prosecuting barrister Ryan Rothwell said the defendant was thought to have taken a heroin overdose, although that was disputed by the defence.
Mr Rothwell said there had been a report that he had taken seven tablets and drunk a bottle of vodka.
Paramedics arrived and provided him with emergency treatment but, when he woke up, he became “immediately violent” and smashed up the back of the ambulance, the court heard.
Taylor got out of the ambulance and ripped plastic guttering pipes off the wall of his home, said Mr Rothwell.
He threatened one paramedic, shouting, “I am going to do him”, and the paramedic locked himself in an emergency response vehicle.
Two others locked themselves in the back of the ambulance, but Taylor got into the front and started throwing things into the rear.
He was shouting, “I am going to do you”, and damaged the body work of the ambulance and the wing mirror.
At one stage, he took off the brake, but the ambulance did not move because of an internal locking service.
Police arrived and found him shouting: “Tell them not to wake me up like that. What the f**k are they doing?”
The prosecutor said that Taylor had previous convictions for 60 offences.
Defending solicitor Emma Simoes said it was not accepted that the defendant had taken a heroin overdose and said there was no evidence of that.
It was his case that he had mixed alcohol with his prescribed medication and had also taken Spice, a legal high.
She said Taylor was an extremely vulnerable young man with a number of complex mental health problems, who had been battling against a drug addiction and was desperate for help.
He was unconscious at the time and was clearly not in the right frame of mind when he woke up, said Ms Simoes.
Taylor told the court the incident had scared him and that his intention was to be clean of drugs by the new year.
Magistrates granted a bail application and ruled that he should live at his home, where he must stay indoors between 8pm and 8am.
He must not be under the influence of alcohol in public and is not to enter any licensed premises – apart from the Tesco store where he buys his food.
Taylor will be sentenced at Wrexham magistrates’ court on December 30.
