Wrexham,North Wales - Brothers launched unprovoked attack on man out Christmas shopping

Ashley Philip Butterfield, of Holborn Crescent, Wrexham, and Michael Thomas Butterfield, of Heol y Plas, Cefn Mawr, admitted the attack on December 23

A man set upon by two brothers in an unprovoked attack as he was Christmas shopping was punched 13 times by one of them, a court heard.
The victim suffered a fractured cheek and other injuries when he was attacked by Ashley Philip Butterfield and Michael Thomas Butterfield in Wrexham.
The attack outside a chip shop was captured on CCTV, which was played at a special Boxing Day hearing at Flintshire magistrates’ court today.
After the attack, Ashley Butterfield, 22, of Holborn Crescent, Wrexham, took to the roof of a building as police moved in to arrest him, and was found to have a lock knife upon him.
He and his brother Michael, 24, a sales rep of Heol y Plas, Cefn Mawr, admitted a joint charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Gary Phillips during the incident on the night of December 23.
Ashley Butterfield was jailed for a total of 42 weeks - 26 weeks for the offences and 16 weeks from a previous suspended sentence.
Magistrates told him that he appeared to thrive on and enjoy inflicting injury on others.
He had a shocking record and went around Wrexham causing havoc, the court heard.
Michael Butterfield was remanded in custody to be sentenced at Mold Crown Court in January, where he was due to be sentenced for another matter.
Prosecutor Mairead Neeson told the court at Mold that the victim was a CCTV operator who was attacked as he did some Christmas shopping.
He was walking along Market Street when he heard a man shouting aggressively: “Do you know who I am?”
As he approached a chip shop in Crescent Close, he saw Ashley Butterfield, who he recognised from his work as a CCTV operator.
He had to pass between the brothers but, as he did so, Ashley turned and bumped into him.
The victim was then set upon by both men.
Ashley was said to have punched the victim 13 times, and he ended up with a fractured cheek bone and other injuries.
Michael Butterfield was later arrested in a car park, but Ashley was only arrested after officers searched commercial premises in Chester Street.
A police negotiator was called in when he ended up on the roof of a building where he was shouting incoherently.
He came down after 10 minutes and was arrested despite trying to run away.
The lock knife was found on him at that stage.
The brothers were said to have been drunk at the time, and gave no comment in interview.
Henry Hills, defending, said that Ashley Butterfield appreciated there was no excuse for such behaviour and had not realised that he had the knife on him.
Michael Butterfield was a sales rep who was anxious to get back to work after the Christmas break, the court heard.
But his bail application pending sentence was refused by magistrates.
