Natural Resources Wales is investigating after receiving reports that the River Teifi in Ceredigion was discoloured
At least 1,000 fish have been killed following a pollution incident near a Welsh river.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is investigating after receiving reports that the River Teifi in Ceredigion was discoloured on Saturday.
NRW officers visited the river and said they believe the likely source of the incident is from an agricultural site in the Tregaron area.
An initial estimate was that at least 200 fish had been killed, with the figure expected to rise.
But NRW has since confirmed that at least 1,000 fish have been killed, including salmon and sea trout.
'Our officers will continue to investigate the full impact on the river'
Work continues to assess the extent of the impact and investigate the cause of the incident.
Gavin Bown, South West Duty Manager for NRW, said: “Our rivers provide a home to rich, diverse and valuable species of plants and animals so it’s important to deal with pollution as quickly as possible.
“As our officers continue to assess the full impact on the river, the number of dead fish discovered is rising.
“The pollution control measures remain in place and we’re investigating the cause of the incident to ensure that no more pollution will enter the river.
“Please report pollution, dead fish or fish in distress to our 24 hour incident line on 03000 65 3000.”
