Rhyl,North Wales - 93-year-old who raped girl for years warned he will spend rest of his life in prison

Jack Beales, of John Street, Rhyl, started abusing the girl when she was just six years old

A man of 93 has been warned he will spend the rest of his days in prison for repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting a terrified young girl over a period of nine or 10 years.
Years later, the victim, who was just six when he started abusing her, plucked up the courage to confront Jack Beales at his home last August, Mold Crown Court heard.
Beales, who lived in the Graianrhyd area between Mold and Ruthin but moved to John Street, Rhyl, after being kicked out of the family home, admitted indecency with a child and indecent assault charges to cover a large number of incidents.
He denied five charges of rape and six other sexual offences committed when he was aged between 67 and 77, but was unanimously convicted by the jury.
He was remanded in custody to be sentenced next week, but he was warned to expect a significant sentence.
Judge Rhys Rowlands told him: “Sadly, you ought to be prepared to spend the rest of your time in prison.
"I doubt very much if you will be released unless as an act of clemency by the Home Secretary.”
Prosecuting barrister Anna Pope said Beales was manipulative and would rape and sexually abuse the girl when they were alone.
The victim, who is now in her 30s, told the jury that she had no option but to confront him in August last year.
She suffered depression, anxiety and had suicidal thoughts and said it was “now or never” in view of his advanced age.
Unless she did something about it, she would never be able to move on with her life, she explained.
She took a friend and her mother, who knew nothing about it, to his home and said she had a secret which had been making her ill.
In front of his wife, the victim told him: “You know what the secret is, Jack.”
When she said he was a paedophile, he was initially taken aback and laughed, but then became aggressive, shouted and said it was a load of rubbish.
Beales admitted in front of his wife and the victim’s mother that he had groped her as a child – but he denied rape.
He later told how “that was what men did” and claimed that he was “giving her pleasure”.
She started to cry and he said she was lying and asked her why she had brought it up.
But she said she could not live with it making her life hell any more.
He then said he had fondled her and that he had got her to touch him, adding: “I was giving her pleasure.”
She said she was terrified of him as a child, and that he had a hold over her and had told her she would go to jail if it ever came out.
The victim said she had been too frightened to tell anyone what was happening to her.
She “remembered it like yesterday” and did not understand what was happening.
At one stage he told her it was “just practice” for when she had a boyfriend and said he knew she was enjoying what he was doing to her.
Beales later said he could not understand why she was bringing it up now “because I did it so long ago”.
Interviewed by police in Mold community hospital, he laughed at some of the allegations, described them as “bunkum” and made "no comment" replies when officers put the details of the complaints to him.
At one point, he was asked what he found amusing and he said he could chuckle if he wanted.
Beales did not give evidence in his own defence.
Defending barrister Andrew Green said his client was a man of no previous convictions who accepted some acts had taken place but he denied other allegations including all the rapes.
The judge told the jury that the reason for delays in the trial had been the fact that the defendant had complained he was ill and had been taken to hospital when the trial was due to take place.
But the medics could find nothing wrong with him and he had been returned to court.
