Distraught neighbour tells how she was caring for the cat at the centre of an RSPCA probe
A distraught neighbour today told how she had been caring for the feral cat killed by hotel staff in Betws y Coed.
The Royal Oak Hotel has faced a social media backlash after it was revealed the RSPCA was investigating last Friday’s killng.
Hotel manager Glen Evans says the cat was humanely killed after ‘posing a threat’ and denied rumours it was struck with a rolling pin.
Mari Martin Matthews, who lives two doors down from the hotel, said she had cared for the cat in recent weeks and had even given it the name of Cali.
The 45-year-old said although the cat was feral she already regarded it as her own.
Mari said: “She was a beautiful little thing, was mostly white with some tabby cat stripes.
“What made me really angry was when Glen Evans the manager of the hotel called her vicious and that she posed a threat.
“Cali was in fact a tiny little thing around 16 weeks old and was delicate like a ballerina.
“It’s true she was a little dirty, but then she was living rough and had a lot of white fur.
“She was feral but she was getting less scared of us each day and by last week was even coming to the back door miaowing for food.
“She’s been missing since last Friday, and I’ve been given a description of the dead cat, and I just can’t believe it has happened.
“And I’d really like to know what has happened, this situation has not been handled well at all.”
Mari added: “The last few days I’ve been feeling so guilty that I didn’t take her in sooner. I was hoping to have gained her trust by Christmas, and she could have been a friend to our other cat who was also feral but who now lives with us.
“I’ve been very tearful the last few days, as I already regarded Cali as our own.”
Animal lovers have taken to social media to express their horror and called for a boycott of the landmark hotel. The hotel’s Facebook and Twitter page have been taken down after being flooded with negative comments.
The hotel’s Trip Advisor page has also received four ‘terrible’ reviews in the last 24 hours. The Royal Oak normally receives positive reviews. It’s not known whether the reviews are linked to the killing of the cat.
The hotel has been approached for a comment.http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/feral-cat-killed-betws-y-12294683
