A FIREMAN was so high on cocaine and other drugs that he crashed into a stationary car and drove into the path of oncoming traffic, a court heard.
Jon Paul Carter hit the stationary BMW in Wrexham, before setting off on a ride of terror behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta along the A483 towards Chester.
A number of panicked witnessess called police after spotting Carter mounting kerbs and driving through red lights along the way, before driving into the contraflow lane on Wrexham Road, causing vehicles to swerve to avoid him.
Rob Youds, prosecuting before magistrates in Chester, said: “At 8am on December 28, witness Martin Davies sees a black Ford Fiesta, which we now know was being driven by Mr Carter, collide with a stationary BMW parked in Edward Street, Wrexham and belonging to a Mr Gytis Ceponis. Mr Carter drove off without stopping.
Mr Youds said: “The collision caused substantial damage to the front side wing of the BMW to the value of £1,500.
“Another witness, a Miss Hughes, reported the defendant driving from Wrexham on the A483 towards Chester at Belgrave and thought he was going to collide with her.
“She witnessed the defendant mount the kerb three times and drive through a red light, so she called police.
“Other witnesses on the forecourt of the BP garage on Wrexham Road describe how the defendant was driving close to the Posthouse roundabout towards oncoming traffic which had to swerve to avoid him.”
Carter, 38, of Leyland Avenue, Cheadle, near Manchester, was eventually arrested at the nearby BP garage and tests revealed he had quantities of cocaine, amphetamine and cannabis in his system and was over the drug-drive limit.
He pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs, driving a motor vehicle dangerously, and failing to stop after an accident when he appeared before West Cheshire Magistrates yesterday.
Miss Estelle Parkhouse, defending, told the court Carter was a fireman with a military background and was experiencing difficulties.
Magistrates committed the case for sentencing before Chester Crown Court on August and bailed Carter until that date.
