Police are cracking down on drug drivers as part of this year’s Christmas anti drink and drug drive campaign.
Over recent days numerous arrests have been made whereby people have failed the roadside drug swipe test.
The most recent was a 35-year-old man who was stopped by the Roads Policing Unit on the A55 near Llandygai this morning (Wednesday, December 9) due to having a defective break light.
The driver failed the drug swipe test and was arrested. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Yesterday afternoon, (Tuesday, December 8) an 18-year-old man was stopped whilst riding his motorcycle in Deganwy where he failed the roadside swipe test after testing positive for cannabis.
He was arrested and later released on police bail whilst further tests are carried out.
During the early hours of Friday, December 4, a 20-year-old man was stopped on his motorcycle on the A55 and was issued with a Traffic Offence Report for driving offences including an expired MOT and defective speedometer.
He was then arrested after failing the swipe test where he tested positive for cannabis.
New legislation came into force in March 2015 which sets legal limits for how much of a substance – both illegal drugs and prescription medications motorists can have in their system whilst driving.
A drug swipe device is used which allows officers to test at the roadside using a swab from inside the driver’s mouth, to see if a motorist has taken cannabis or cocaine.
PC Trystan Bevan from the roads policing unit said: “New drug drive laws introduced earlier this year have highlighted the prevalence of drug use amongst people who drive.
“Drug testing is now routine at the roadside in North Wales. Our message is clear, don’t take the risk.”
Anybody who may have information relating to drug drivers can contact North Wales Police on 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
