A postman was today (Tuesday, December 8) given an eight months suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to two charges of delaying the mail.
All the hundreds of items consisted of unfranked marketing mail apart from one which was a handwritten letter, Caernarfon crown court heard.
Peter Lunn admitted that between August 2012 and last March he delayed a total of 806 postal packets, 56 of which were in his car and 750 in his home at Lawson Road, Colwyn Bay.
Frances Willmott, prosecuting, said Lunn had explained that he'd been using his car for deliveries. He could not give a reason why mail was in his flat.
She said he had made no financial gain from the offences.
Matthew Curtis, defending, said Lunn, the father of two children, had to contend with severe personal problems and was of low risk of reoffending. There had been drug issues. He had skills to offer following his experience of substance misuse and emotional difficulties, and Lunn was being helped by social services. Mr Curtis said a report set out  "the chaotic nature of his relationship with employment."  However it wasn't a case of dumping the mail but of delaying it.
Imposing the sentence, suspended for two years, Judge Philip Harris-Jenkins said there was "clearly a background in your personal circumstances which led to your behaviour."
He added : "It's a serious offence because it makes the public less confident in the Royal Mail, but it's a case where you didn't have financial gain."
The judge ordered Lunn to engage in a rehabilitation activity requirement, carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, and to pay a contribution of £500 towards prosecution costs.
