A MAN stole from his friend when he was trusted with his bank card while he was in prison.
Anthony Vaughan Davies, of Ty Nos, Holt Road, Wrexham admitted fraud after stealing more than £700 from his friend’s bank account.
Rhian Jackson, prosecuting at Wrexham Magistrates Court, said the theft took place after Davies’ friend was sentenced to prison in September.
She said: “The day before he gave the defendant, who he regarded as a friend, his NatWest bank card on September 15 to look after – but not permission to use it.
“He states he did not give him the PIN number but that he had previously been with him when taking money from his account.
“On coming out of prison he realised money had been taken out of the account, and the defendant said he had transferred the money to his account but would give it him back.
“In a personal statement the victim said he was upset, it angered him, and left him with no money to buy food. He expected around £800 to be in his account when he left prison but was in the red.”
In a police interview, Davies, 54, admitted he had used the money to pay off a drug debt.
Alun Williams, defending, said: “The card was given him to keep safe, but it was a fairly stupid act to give your cash card to someone with a profound drug addiction and drug debt.”
District judge Gwyn Jones said: “This was a mean offence, a breach of trust.
“Whoever the victim may be, you breached his trust, he trusted you and he is £730 down.”
Davies was given a 30-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay back the £730 in compensation to his friend.
He will also pay £85 in court costs, and a £130 victim surcharge
