Llandudno,North Wales - Great Orme caves sealed off to stop homeless

Many have hit out at Conwy council's action, with a Llandudno charity saying rough sleepers have 'nowhere else to go'

Great idea, but where do the homeless and drug users go now? Back into the town!

Caves on the Great Orme have been sealed off to stop homeless people from sleeping there.
Wardens on the Llandudno headland have cleared tents, needles, beer cans and human waste from the caves while police officers were in attendance.
In December 2014, the Daily Post highlighted the plight of Ray Burton, who was living in one of the caves, with people horrified to discover there was a modern day “caveman”.
It’s understood Mr Burton and some other homeless people were still living in the caves until they were fenced off.
Many have hit out at the move, with a homeless charity in the town saying rough sleepers have “nowhere else to go”.
Brenda Hewitt, of Hope Restored, said: “My guys told me the caves on the Orme have been shut off so that they (the homeless) can no longer live or sleep there.
“At least in those caves they weren’t doing any harm to anyone and they felt secure as they were off the streets, where they can sometimes feel very vulnerable.
“Now these men are sleeping rough around the town, and the problem we are getting now is their tents, sleeping bags and possessions are going missing as they can’t carry them around all day.”
Rachel Carr, who is a friend of Mr Burton, said: “I think it’s disgusting the caves have been boarded up.
“The caves were a refuge for a lot of homeless people. They could make a fire there to keep warm and cook some food, and it was somewhere for them to go away from the town.
“I know a cave isn’t ideal but at least it was some kind of shelter.”
A Conwy council spokeswoman said: “Periodically the old quarry sites are cleared of rubbish and the boundary fences repaired.”
