A man who launched a “violent attack” on another man he believed was having an affair with his girlfriend has been sent to prison.
Adam White admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on Shane Edwards by repeatedly punching and kicking him after searching his phone, computer and post for “evidence”.
Sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, Judge Geraint Walters described the incident as “a sustained and very violent attack”.
The court heard the two men had known each other for about a year at the time of the incident, although prosecutor Jason Howells described them as “acquaintances, rather than friends”.
Mr Howells said the defendant went to Mr Edwards’ flat around 6am on April 11.
'Agitated and rambling'
The complainant was at home with his partner and let White in when he rang the doorbell, soon noting he was “agitated” and “rambling”.
The court heard White, 27, from Linton Court in Abersychan, Pontypool , picked up Mr Edwards’ mobile phone and started looking at his computer and rummaging through his post.
Mr Howells said: “The defendant had in his mind that Shane Edwards had started a relationship with his girlfriend and he was looking for evidence of that.”
The complainant denied the relationship and White said he was just “being nosey”.
The court heard the two men went to a nearby shop together, before returning to the car park behind the block of flats around 9am.
Mr Edwards said he had to go back inside and described the defendant “trotting up” behind him, before hitting him to the right side of his face.
Mr Howells said: “The defendant fell to his hands and knees.”
'A flurry of blows'
The court heard White shouted “you’re s****ing my missus” and punched him repeatedly in the head and kidneys, before stamping on his head.
A witness described “a flurry of blows” and reported seeing at least 10 punches to the head.
The prosecutor said White then picked up his keys, which had fallen out of his pocket, and walked off.
Mr Edwards suffered bruising and swelling to his right eye and a fracture to the eye socket. In a victim impact statement, he said he did not want his five-year-old son to see him in that state.
The defendant was arrested the same day and the prosecutor said he shouted and talked over the police officer who tried to interview him.
He denied the assault and was later identified by the complainant and witness.
The court heard he had six previous convictions, including five for assault.
'He lost his self-control'
Stephen Thomas, defending, said the attack was not planned and his client was “angry” after believing the complainant was seeing his partner.
He added: “He simply lost his self-control. He understands he has got a problem with his temper.
“He is genuinely sorry for what he has done wrong and the effect it has had upon not only the victim, but his family and partner.”
White was sentenced to 32 weeks in prison.
Judge Geraint Walters said: “You do not need me to tell you that this particular incident was extremely ugly.
“It is an understatement to say that you completely lost the plot that day.”
