Cardiff,South Wales - Police given more time to question Cardiff terror suspect arrested on the street

Officers searched two addresses in Cardiff

A 33-year-old man from Cardiff was arrested last Thursday

Police have been given a warrant to have more time to question a Cardiff man who was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences last week.
The 33-year-old man was arrested last Thursday by officers from the Metropolitan Police Services' Counter Terrorism Command.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Monday that a warrant for further detention has been obtained.
He could not confirm until when the further detention lasts.
The 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of terrorist acts under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT).
The arrest, which took place on a street in Cardiff, was pre-planned and as a result of a pro-active investigation by the MPS Counter Terrorism Command supported by the Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit [WECTU].
Officers also searched two addresses in Cardiff.
There was a heavy police presence in Grangetown and Riverside suburbs of Cardiff on Thursday evening - with officers from the Metropolitan Police standing guard.

How a further detention warrant works under section 41 of TACT 2000:

  • An arrested person may be detained for a period of no longer than 48 hours.
  • This period may be extended with an application of a warrant of further detention.
  • This is initially for a maximum period of seven days.
  • It may be extended on further application to fourteen days.
  • Applications for further detention are made within the initial 48 hour period of detention or within six hours of the end of that period.
