A Welshman has revealed how he was arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of attempting to leave the UK to fight ISIS.
The 22-year-old says he decided to go because people need help
The 22-year-old from Pembrey, Carmarthenshire was detained under suspicion of terrorism offences while attempting to board a plane at the London terminal on September 13.
He claims that he was detained for 30 hours at the airport before being escorted from London back to Pembrey following his arrest.
The man, who we will not name, said: “A lot of British people are going out to Iraq to fight Isis.
“I was detained as I was about to board the plane and then interviewed for about 30 hours, I was then arrested under schedule 7 for terrorism offences.
“My friends think I’m mad for wanting to do this, but after seeing how it is out there and how much people need help, I just decided to go.
“I’m not concerned with my own safety.”
Dyfed-Powys Police, which is involved in the case, became involved after being made aware that the Pembrey resident was considering travelling to Iraq to fight with the Kurdish forces against Daesh, otherwise known as Isis.
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “A 22-year-old man from the Carmarthenshire area has been arrested in London on suspicion of terrorism offences.
“He has been released on bail pending further police enquires.”
In a letter sent to the man before he attempted to fly to Iraq, the force stated it had a duty to protect life where there is a risk to life.
It also advised that as a British citizen he could be at increased risk of being targeted or kidnapped Daesh or other terrorist groups.
The force stated that travelling to conflict zones in Iraq to fight could amount to offences under UK legislation, which could result in prosecution.
It has also been confirmed the man has sought local legal representation in Llanelli.
