Stephen Pike was found guilty of the murder of Clint Simms following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court

A man has been found guilty of murdering a dad-of-five.
It took a jury more than 13 hours to return a verdict in the trial of Stephen Pike.
The 59-year-old had accepted stabbing Clint Simms, 39, in the chest outside his flat in Mill Road, Ely, but denied murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter, claiming he acted in self-defence.
Mr Simms was pronounced dead by paramedics outside his mother’s house in Glyndwr Road at around 12.15pm on March 3.

Sentencing will take place next week

The jury of nine men and three women retired to consider their verdict at 1.30pm on Wednesday and returned their verdict at 3.15pm on Friday.
The Recorder of Cardiff, Judge Eleri Rees, told the jury she would accept a majority verdict, which was returned with 11 agreeing with a murder verdict and one disagreeing.
As the verdict was returned, members of Mr Simms family broke into tears, but remained silent. Pike was emotionless as the verdict was read.
The defendant will return to the same court on Thursday, September 29 for sentencing.

"The actions of Stephen Pike have robbed us of many more years"

Following the verdict, the family of Clint Simms released a statement describing him as a "good father, son, brother and grandfather who was needlessly taken".
It read: "There will be many different opinions formed of Clint following the statements and evidence heard at the trial, however our memories are of a good father, son, brother and grandfather who was needlessly taken from his family and friends, a young man with his whole life ahead of him.
"The events of March 3 and the actions of Stephen Pike have robbed us of many more years of having Clint Simms in our lives, however the memories we have shared with him, and the time we spent together have enriched our lives and those memories will never die or be forgotten.
"Clint was a man who would always be loving and respectful to all who were loving and respectful to him, very loyal and protective of his family and close friends.
"The family would like to express their gratitude to all the witnesses who came forward to give evidence in this case, under difficult circumstances, their contribution was greatly appreciated."
