A heated argument in a Bangor pub ended with a man smashing a glass into the other man’s face a court heard.
Michael John Marnell, of Ffordd y Castell, Bangor, admitted wounding Stephen Davies in the incident at the Kings Arms in Bangor’s High Street last April.
The 31-year-old was handed a 14-month prison sentence.
Jailing him Judge Niclas Parry, sitting at Caernarfon Crown Court, said: “In the middle of the afternoon, in the presence of others you hit a drunken man in the face with a glass.
“Incidents of glassing on licensed premises are far too common and offenders have to be deterred.”
The judge said Marnell had an appalling record with two previous convictions for serious public disorder and two for violence.
“I take note of your guilty plea and that this was a single blow and your victim was drunk but this is a serious matter,” he added.
The judge had seen CCTV footage of the incident in which Mr Davies and Marnell were seen at the bar.
Mr Davies became agitated at one point and Marnell is seen to stand and pick up the glass in his left hand. Without warning he hits Mr Davies in the face with the glass.
Other drinkers in the pub go to Mr Davies’ aid and overpower Marnell.
Emmalyne Downing, prosecuting, said Mr Davies did go to hospital but faced with a queue at A&E did not wait for treatment.
He later refused to provide police with details of his injuries.
Dafydd Roberts, defending, said Marnell had pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity.
“He was provoked and this is borne out by the CCTV footage. I accept he has previous convictions for violence but I would urge the court to pass the shortest possible sentence.”
The judge made no further orders and did not order Marnell to pay compensation to his victim.
Sergeant Dana Baxter, based at Bangor Police Station said: “We welcome today’s sentence and hope that those in our communities who use violence must realise there is a consequence to their actions.
"North Wales Police will relentlessly pursue those individuals who cause most harm and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.”
