A PARKING meter and sign have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack.
The incident happened at the Station Road car park in Queensferry at around 1.23am yesterday.
Cllr Bernie Attridge, Flintshire Council’s cabinet member for environment, appealed for information.
He said: “We will not be intimidated by anyone on parking charges in this way.
“In this time of austerity, parking charges are here to stay.
“I would call on anyone who knows anything to contact North Wales Police.
“I understand police will be studying CCTV images and hopefully will be able to bring these people to justice.”
Parking charges were introduced in towns across Flintshire last year, and a 12-month review held last month determined that they should remain in place despite controversy.
A number of community leaders have argued the charges were not fair or equal, and were stifling the town centre.
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said a tyre was placed on top of the parking meter and set alight.
The spokesman added: “We sent one appliance from Deeside which used a hosereel to put out the fire.
“Due to the nature of the incident, it is suspected to be a deliberate ignition.”
Flintshire Council's chief officer for Streetscene and yransportation, Steve Jones, said: "The council received a report that a 'Pay and Display' parking machine in Station Road, Queensferry was set alight.
"The machine is now out of order and the council is organising for the machine to be repaired.
"The matter has been reported to North Wales Police."
Police confirmed they were aware of the incident.
