A MAN who fled the scene after he flipped his car was found with a bloodied car key next to his bed.
Adam Jasper, 25, of St David’s Crescent, Llay, admitted driving while under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop after an accident on New Year’s Day.
He also pleaded guilty to driving with cocaine and benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, in his system.
Justin Espie, prosecuting, told Wrexham Magistrates Court yesterday how at about 4am on January 1, police officers were made aware of an accident involving a single vehicle on Wrexham Road in Llay.
The car involved was on its roof, but nobody was with the vehicle.
The court heard how officers also found some fresh blood on the driver side door of the car, at which point they made inquiries to find the vehicle’s registered keeper and arrived at Jasper’s home at about 4.45am, where there was also blood on the rear door handle.
Inside, Mr Espie said, they found the defendant in bed and next to the bed a car key, which had blood on it. There was also a small amount of blood on his pillow.
When breathalysed, Jasper tested positive for alcohol, giving a reading of 68 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
He also tested positive for cocaine, with a reading 58 microgrammes per litre of blood. The legal limit is 10.
Melissa Griffiths, defending, said her client had been out drinking with friends on New Year’s Eve in Wrexham town centre.
She told the court: “He remembers going for food and getting in a taxi to go home, but for some reason he got into his vehicle and there was an accident.
“Thankfully no other vehicles were involved and no one was injured apart from him and he only sustained minor injuries.”
Ms Griffiths added that her client had told the police he had not used cocaine for a few days prior to the accident and that benzoylecgonine, which is produced from metabolising the substance, can remain in the system for up to four weeks.
She added that he was no longer taking the drug and that the crash had been a massive wake-up call for him.
“He does not associate with the people he was with on that night,” she said, adding: “His father says he seems to be a completely different person now. He’s using his free time in much more constructive ways.”
Chair of the magistrates bench Justine Barlow issued Jasper with two £460 fines: one for driving with excess alcohol and another for driving with excess cocaine.
He was also fined £275 for failing to stop after the accident and was disqualified from driving for 20 months.
He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £46 victim surcharge.
